Evolution White 16th Edition Wine Review

Evolution White WineIt’s always amazing when a winemaker blends 2 or 3 varietals to make an even better wine. However when a winemaker can blend 9 varietals and make an outstanding wine, it’s a work of art.  The Evolution 16th Edition wine is such a blend. With its wonderful floral aroma, and touches of honey this wine is a lush beautiful work of art. Rich orange and peach flavors, this wine has a smooth finish that lingers nicely for a long time.

Evolution is the second label of Sokol Blosser Winery located in Dundee, Oregon

APPELLATION: American
WINE ALCOHOL: 12.0% by volume
GRAPE VARIETALS: Muller-Thurgau, White Riesling, Semillon, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat Canelli, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner

Manchester Star Ale Beer Review

manchester_star_round This is a beer I recently picked up at a local store and was presently surprised. This beer is intensely dark. With full rich caramel flavors and touches of chocolate and hints of licorice. Extremely smooth with a nice easy finish. Not harsh like you find in other dark beers.  This beer, made by JW Lees in Manchester UK is worth searching out.  JW Lees has been brewing beer since 1828 in Northwest England.  This beer is truly an under rated, excellent value. JWleesManStar

Respect For Wine Heritage

Recently I looked at the website for a winery that I am very familiar with.  This winery is under new ownership. The previous owners are one of the finest families I have known and people I have great respect for. They made wine for generations and the wines were extremely consistent as well as top notch. However the new owner markets the winery as if the family is still involved, which they are not. Additionally they have converted a top notch, extremely modern winery, into artistically what looks like a cheap low grade bordello. Although the wines under the new owner have gotten very good reviews from other sources, I prefer not to even sample their vintages. I can’t get past what looks like the complete disrespect for the former owners as well as the disrespect for the history and art of the wine industry.

It was not too long ago when the winemakers and winery owners had a respect for the land, grape and history that goes with it. Today many new owners or new generations are looking for the fast buck, kicking out high price wine that should be at half the price, and opening up a tourist resort at the winery. With little or no respect for the heritage of the area they are in, the industry, or previous ownership.

Now I want to be clear; this is not a blanket statement. There are many more wineries that respect their history then those who do not. However I can’t help but ask “How do you expect me to respect your wines when you cannot respect the history of the people you have on your own label?”  The wine industry is a business just like any other. However it is an industry that is an art form and with a beautiful history behind it.

Learn it, live it, love it.

Belhaven Brewery Scottish Stout Beer Review

Belhaven Brewery has always been one of my favorite beers. Established in 1799, with Belhaven it’s about the quality and the Belhaven Scottish Stoutquantity. You may pay a dollar or two more than the major everyday brands, but you will savor every drop.  This porter beer is as black and dark as they come. Even doing the light test I could not see any light.  This beer is so dark that holding it up to a light, no light could be seen through the glass, something I love to see in Zinfandel’s from the Sierra Nevada Foothills

Fantastic mouth full of chocolate, hints of walnuts, smooth, touch of vanilla and Carmel. Finish lingers for a long time. Smooth and easy to drink with just the slightest of bites in the finish.

If you want to experience a high quality beer for a great price, try Belhaven Scottish Stout and the rest of the Belhaven line.

Alcohol 7%

Cloudy Bay 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Review

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Cloudy Bay is for many the benchmark of Sauvignon Blanc wines.  The 2012 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is no exception to that rule.  This superb wine is extremely intense and rich with strong overtones of cantaloupe, grapefruit and hints of apricot.  The finish falls off smoothly with a richness usually reserved for Chardonnay.  I don’t want to come out and say the 2012 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is the best Sauvignon Blanc out there, but so far it’s my benchmark.

APPELLATION: Marlborough, New Zealand
HARVEST DATE: March 14, 2012
WINE ALCOHOL: 13.5% by volume
WINE ACID: 7.5 grams per liter
WINE PH: 3.30
